Why Compress PDF Files?
Large PDF files are a common problem — they're slow to share via email, hard to upload to web forms, and take up unnecessary storage. Most of the file size in a PDF comes from embedded images, which are often stored at higher quality than needed.
Common scenarios include reducing file size for email attachments (many providers limit to 10-25MB), meeting upload size limits on web portals and forms, saving cloud storage space, and speeding up document loading on mobile devices.
Our tool compresses the images inside your PDF while keeping text, fonts, and layout perfectly intact.

PDF Compression FAQs
Common questions about compressing PDF files
Is this tool free?
Yes, our PDF compressor is completely free with no limitations. Compress as many PDFs as you need without signing up.
Is my PDF secure?
Absolutely. All processing happens directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF is never uploaded to our servers or any third party.
How does PDF compression work?
Our tool identifies embedded images in your PDF and re-encodes them as JPEG at a lower quality setting. Text, fonts, and vector graphics are not affected — only raster images are compressed.
Will compression make my PDF look bad?
At "Medium" and "High" quality levels, the difference is barely noticeable for most documents. Use "Low" quality only when file size is more important than image clarity.
What does "Downsample images" do?
When enabled, images larger than 1500px in either dimension are scaled down proportionally. This is useful for PDFs with high-resolution photos that don't need to be that large for screen viewing.
Why is my compressed PDF the same size?
If your PDF contains mostly text and vector graphics with very few or no images, compression won't significantly reduce the file size. Compression primarily targets embedded raster images.
Is there a file size limit?
Our tool supports PDF files up to 50MB. Larger files with many images may take longer to process as each image is re-encoded in your browser.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
No, you need to remove the password first. Use our Unlock PDF tool to remove the password, then compress the file.
