How to Validate a Twitter Card

  1. Paste the URL of the page you want to share on X.
  2. Click "Validate Card" to fetch its twitter: and og: meta tags.
  3. Check the X card preview and switch between the large image and summary layouts.
  4. Fix the errors and warnings, then copy the suggested meta tags into your page.

What Happened to the Official Twitter Card Validator?

Twitter's Card Validator (cards-dev.twitter.com/validator) was the standard way to preview a card before posting. In 2022 Twitter removed its preview, and X never brought it back. Today the only built-in check is pasting the link into the post composer, which needs a logged-in account and tells you nothing about what is wrong.

This X card validator reads the same tags the X crawler reads, shows the card, and lists every problem it finds: missing tags, relative or non-HTTPS image URLs, unsupported formats, and images that are too small or will be cropped.

X Card Types

twitter:cardWhat it showsUse it for
summary_large_imageFull-width image with the title on top of it and the domain belowBlog posts, landing pages, products. The default for most sites.
summarySmall square thumbnail next to the domain, title and descriptionDocs, profiles, pages where a logo is the only image
playerInline video or audio playerMedia pages. Needs extra twitter:player tags and approval from X.
appApp name, icon and store linkMobile app promotion. Needs twitter:app:* tags.

summarySquare image144 x 144 px4096 x 4096 px1:1

Use JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF under 5 MB. SVG is not supported, and animated GIFs only show their first frame. Serve the image from an absolute https:// URL that does not require a login.

Twitter Card Meta Tags

A large image card needs only twitter:card plus a title and an image. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image when the twitter: versions are missing, so pages that already have Open Graph tags usually need one extra line. A complete set looks like this:

<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />
<meta name="twitter:site" content="@yourbrand" />
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Your page title (up to 70 characters)" />
<meta name="twitter:description" content="A short summary (up to 200 characters)" />
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/card-1200x628.png" />
<meta name="twitter:image:alt" content="What the image shows" />

What our customers say

People love how great our product works and how we're always there to help

Rated 4.7

"Business pressures now demand almost a 24x7 operation. The difference between choosing one SaaS product or another isn't just down to the technical capabilities of each, but down to their responsiveness when it doesn't quite work. In this case, an issue blocked us from being able to use the platform as intended. Within minutes of using the live chat, the issue was not only reproduced but correctly identified. Within the hour, the hot fix had been coded, tested and applied - unblocking the bottleneck and allowing us to carry on working. This is exceptional and the reason why I can't recommend this company enough - I'm so impressed and very grateful for their hard work. Keep it up!"

Twitter Card Validator FAQs

Common questions about Twitter (X) cards and how to fix them

Is there still an official Twitter Card Validator?

No. Twitter removed the preview from its Card Validator (cards-dev.twitter.com/validator) in 2022, and X has not replaced it. The only built-in option is pasting the link into the X post composer. This free Twitter card validator shows the card and explains what is wrong without posting anything.

How do I validate a Twitter card?

Paste the page URL into the validator above and click "Validate Card". It fetches the twitter: and og: meta tags, renders the X card preview, and lists errors (missing twitter:card, no image, relative image URL), warnings (small or cropped image, HTTP image, long title) and the tags that pass.

What is the correct Twitter card image size?

For summary_large_image cards, use 1200x628 pixels (about 1.91:1). The minimum is 300x157 and the maximum is 4096x4096. For summary cards, use a square image of at least 144x144. Keep the file under 5 MB in JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF format.

Why is my Twitter card not showing on X?

The usual causes are a missing twitter:card tag, an image URL that is relative or needs a login, an image over 5 MB or in SVG format, a robots.txt rule that blocks Twitterbot, or an old version of the page cached by X. Run the URL through the validator to find which one applies.

How do I refresh a Twitter card after changing my tags?

X caches card data for about seven days, and without the old Card Validator there is no button to clear it. Share the URL with a query string, for example ?v=2, so X treats it as a new link and fetches the tags again.

Does X use Open Graph tags?

Yes. If twitter:title, twitter:description or twitter:image are missing, X uses og:title, og:description and og:image. twitter:card has no Open Graph equivalent, so add it yourself to choose between the summary and large image layouts.

What is the difference between summary and summary_large_image?

summary shows a small square thumbnail next to the title and description. summary_large_image shows a full-width image with the title on top of it and the domain below. Use the large image card for blog posts, products and landing pages, where the image does the selling.

Why does X not show my description on large image cards?

X shows large image cards as the image with the title overlaid and the domain underneath. The description is only visible on summary cards, so put your key message inside the image itself.

Is this X card validator free?

Yes. It is free with no signup and no limits. It works for any public page that does not require a login.

How can I generate Twitter card images automatically?

Design one card template and render a unique image per page with the Image Automation API. Pass the page title, author or product photo, then set the returned URL as twitter:image and og:image. See the OG images use case for examples.
