How Pixels Convert to Inches
Pixels are the building blocks of a digital image, while inches measure physical size. To convert between them you need the DPI (dots per inch), also called PPI (pixels per inch), which sets how many pixels are packed into each inch of output.
The formula is: inches = pixels ÷ DPI. For example, a 1080 × 1080 pixel image at 300 DPI prints at 3.6 × 3.6 inches (1080 ÷ 300). The same image at 96 DPI would measure 11.25 × 11.25 inches on screen — much larger, but far less sharp if printed.
That trade-off is why DPI matters. For crisp print you want at least 300 DPI, so a larger pixel count yields a bigger sharp print. Drop to 150 DPI for large-format pieces seen from afar, or 96 DPI for screen-only graphics where physical inches don't matter.

Pixels to Inches FAQs
Common questions about converting pixels to inches
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the number of pixels by the DPI (dots per inch). The formula is inches = pixels ÷ DPI. For example, 1500 pixels at 300 DPI equals 5 inches (1500 ÷ 300). Enter your pixels and DPI above and the result updates instantly.
How many inches is 1080 pixels?
At 300 DPI, 1080 pixels is 3.6 inches. At 96 DPI it is 11.25 inches. The physical size depends entirely on the DPI you choose, because pixels have no fixed real-world size on their own.
What DPI should I use?
Use 300 DPI for high-quality print such as photos and flyers. Use 150 DPI for large-format prints viewed from a distance. Use 96 DPI (or 72 DPI) for screens, where DPI mainly describes pixel density rather than print size.
Is my image big enough to print?
For a sharp print you generally want at least 300 DPI at the final size. This tool shows a print quality indicator: if your pixel dimensions give you 300 DPI or more at the chosen size, it will print crisply; below about 150 DPI it may look soft or pixelated.
What is the largest size I can print sharply?
Divide your pixel dimensions by 300 to get the largest high-quality print size in inches. For example, a 3000 × 2400 pixel image prints sharply up to 10 × 8 inches at 300 DPI.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes pixel density in a digital image or on a screen, while DPI (dots per inch) refers to ink dots in print. For this conversion they are used interchangeably — both define how many pixels map to one inch.
Can I convert inches back to pixels?
Yes. Use our inches to pixels converter to do the reverse — multiply inches by DPI to get the pixel dimensions you need for a given print size.
Is this pixels to inches converter free?
Yes, completely free with unlimited conversions and no signup. All calculations happen locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to any server.
