How Inches Convert to Pixels
Inches are a physical unit of length, while pixels are the smallest unit of a digital image. To translate between them you need a third value: DPI (dots per inch), sometimes called PPI (pixels per inch). DPI tells you how many pixels fit into one inch of your final output.
The formula is simple: pixels = inches × DPI. For example, a 4 × 6 inch photo at 300 DPI is 1200 × 1800 pixels (4 × 300 and 6 × 300). The same photo at 96 DPI — the typical screen resolution — would only be 384 × 576 pixels.
Choosing the right DPI matters. Use 300 DPI for professional print such as photos, flyers, and business cards. Use 150 DPI for large-format work like banners viewed from a distance. Use 96 DPI (or 72 DPI) for screen and web graphics where physical size is irrelevant.
Inches to Pixels Reference Table
| Size | Inches | Pixels @ 300 DPI | Pixels @ 96 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Card | 3.5 × 2 | 1050 × 600 | 336 × 192 |
| Postcard | 4 × 6 | 1200 × 1800 | 384 × 576 |
| Photo (5 × 7) | 5 × 7 | 1500 × 2100 | 480 × 672 |
| A4 | 8.27 × 11.69 | 2480 × 3508 | 794 × 1123 |
| US Letter | 8.5 × 11 | 2550 × 3300 | 816 × 1056 |
| Poster | 24 × 36 | 7200 × 10800 | 2304 × 3456 |

Inches to Pixels FAQs
Common questions about converting inches to pixels
How do I convert inches to pixels?
Multiply the measurement in inches by the DPI (dots per inch). The formula is pixels = inches × DPI. For example, 5 inches at 300 DPI equals 1500 pixels (5 × 300). Enter your inches and DPI above and the result updates instantly.
What DPI should I use?
Use 300 DPI for high-quality print such as photos, flyers, and business cards. Use 150 DPI for large-format prints like banners and posters viewed from a distance. Use 96 DPI (or 72 DPI) for screen and web graphics.
How many pixels is 1 inch?
It depends on the DPI. At 96 DPI (the standard screen resolution), 1 inch equals 96 pixels. At 300 DPI (the print standard), 1 inch equals 300 pixels. At 72 DPI, 1 inch equals 72 pixels.
How big is an 8.5 × 11 inch page in pixels?
A US Letter page (8.5 × 11 inches) is 2550 × 3300 pixels at 300 DPI, or 816 × 1056 pixels at 96 DPI. Use the US Letter preset above to load these values automatically.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes pixel density on a screen or in a digital image, while DPI (dots per inch) technically refers to ink dots in print. For this conversion they are used interchangeably — both tell you how many pixels map to one inch.
Why do my pixel dimensions look small at low DPI?
Pixel count scales directly with DPI. A design at 72 or 96 DPI has roughly a third as many pixels as the same physical size at 300 DPI. If you are printing, always use 300 DPI so the image stays sharp.
Can I convert pixels back to inches?
Yes. Use our pixels to inches converter to do the reverse — divide pixels by DPI to get the physical size. It also tells you the largest size you can print at a given quality.
Is this inches to pixels converter free?
Yes, completely free with unlimited conversions and no signup. All calculations happen locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to any server.
