How to View Image EXIF Data
- Click the upload area and select an image from your device (JPG, PNG, TIFF, or HEIC).
- EXIF metadata is extracted and displayed automatically — camera info, GPS, dates, and more.
- Optionally download a copy of the image with all EXIF data stripped for privacy.
- Click "Remove Image" to clear and start over with a new photo.
Why View Photo Metadata?
- Privacy Awareness: Photos from smartphones often contain GPS coordinates that reveal exactly where the picture was taken. Check before sharing publicly.
- Photography Settings: Review camera make, model, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to understand how a photo was captured and learn from it.
- Date Verification: Check when a photo was actually taken versus when it was modified or downloaded, useful for legal, journalistic, or archival purposes.
- Image Forensics: Identify the software used to edit a photo, detect modifications, and verify the authenticity of image files.
Understanding EXIF Data
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard for metadata embedded in image files. When you take a photo with a digital camera or smartphone, EXIF data is automatically recorded inside the image file.
What it contains: Camera make and model, lens information, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), date and time, GPS coordinates, orientation, color space, white balance, and sometimes even a thumbnail preview.
Privacy concern: GPS coordinates in EXIF data can reveal your exact location. Many social media platforms strip EXIF data on upload, but sharing original files via email or cloud storage preserves all metadata. Our "Download Without EXIF" feature lets you remove this data before sharing.
Why Use Our EXIF Viewer?
A fast, private, and comprehensive way to inspect photo metadata directly in your browser.
Your photos never leave your device. All EXIF parsing happens locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
View all metadata including TIFF, EXIF, GPS, ICC, and IPTC tags. Every field embedded in the image is extracted and displayed.
If your photo contains GPS coordinates, we display them with a direct link to Google Maps so you can see exactly where it was taken.
See detailed camera and lens information — make, model, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, flash, and exposure mode.
Download a clean copy of your image with all EXIF metadata removed — perfect for sharing photos without revealing your location or device info.
Use the viewer right away — no account, no email, no signup. Completely free with unlimited use.

Image EXIF Viewer FAQs
Common questions about viewing and understanding photo metadata
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in image files by cameras and smartphones. It includes information like camera make and model, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), date and time the photo was taken, GPS coordinates, and more. This data is stored inside the image file itself.
Do all images contain EXIF data?
Not all images have EXIF data. Photos taken with digital cameras and smartphones typically include rich EXIF metadata. However, screenshots, graphics created in design software, and images that have been processed or re-saved by certain applications may have little or no EXIF data. Some social media platforms also strip EXIF data when you upload photos.
Can someone find my location from a photo?
Yes, if your camera or smartphone records GPS coordinates in the EXIF data (which most phones do by default), anyone with the original image file can extract your exact location. This is why it is important to check and optionally strip EXIF data before sharing photos publicly. Our tool lets you download a copy without any metadata.
How do I remove EXIF data from a photo?
Use our "Download Without EXIF" button after uploading your image. This creates a clean copy by re-drawing the image on a canvas, which strips all metadata including GPS coordinates, camera info, and timestamps. The resulting file contains only pixel data with no embedded metadata.
What image formats support EXIF data?
JPEG/JPG is the most common format for EXIF data and is widely supported by all cameras. TIFF files also support full EXIF metadata. HEIC/HEIF files from iPhones contain EXIF data as well. PNG files have limited metadata support through text chunks but do not use the standard EXIF format. WebP has basic EXIF support.
What camera settings can I see in EXIF data?
EXIF data typically includes camera make and model, lens model, focal length, aperture (f-number), shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, flash status, exposure mode, metering mode, white balance, color space, and orientation. The exact fields available depend on your camera or phone model.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. All EXIF parsing happens 100% in your browser using JavaScript. Your photos never leave your device, making this tool completely private and secure. There are no uploads, no cloud processing, and no data collection.
Why would I want to view EXIF data?
Common reasons include checking privacy-sensitive GPS data before sharing photos, learning photography settings from great shots, verifying when a photo was actually taken, identifying which camera or lens was used, and checking image orientation and color space information for design work.
