What is HEIC format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF standard to store images at roughly half the file size of JPG while maintaining the same visual quality. Why are my iPhone photos in HEIC format?

iPhones use HEIC by default because it produces significantly smaller files than JPG — often 40-50% smaller — while keeping the same image quality. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats, choosing "Most Compatible" to shoot in JPG instead.

Will I lose quality when converting HEIC to JPG?

JPG uses lossy compression, so there is a small amount of quality reduction. However, at the default quality setting of 92%, the difference is virtually imperceptible to the human eye. You can increase the quality slider to 100% for maximum fidelity, or lower it for smaller file sizes.

What is the difference between JPG and PNG output?

JPG produces smaller files and is ideal for photographs and sharing online. PNG is lossless (no quality loss) and supports transparency, making it better for graphics, screenshots, or when you need pixel-perfect accuracy. For most HEIC photos from an iPhone, JPG is the best choice.
