What is AVIF format?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Why convert AVIF to PNG instead of JPG?

Is the conversion lossless?

Yes. PNG uses lossless compression, so no image data is lost during conversion. The PNG output will contain an exact pixel-for-pixel representation of the decoded AVIF image. Note that if the original AVIF was saved with lossy compression, the PNG will preserve whatever quality the AVIF had — it will not add any additional quality loss.
